Dandruff & scalp issues
Flakes, itching or a sore, irritated scalp.
Dandruff is common. It is not harmful, and you cannot catch it from anyone. Flakes and itching can come from an oily, flaky skin condition linked to a yeast that normally lives on skin (seborrhoeic dermatitis). They can also come from dryness, product build-up or sensitive skin. An anti-dandruff shampoo from the chemist is the usual first step. Give it about 4 weeks. If it does not help, or your scalp is red, swollen or very itchy, see a doctor. Some scalp problems need medical treatment.
What can cause it
- Seborrhoeic dermatitis, a common cause of dandruff
- Dry scalp, often worse in winter or with very hot showers
- Build-up or a reaction to hair products or dyes
- Less often, psoriasis or a fungal infection
General information, not a diagnosis. Only a consultation can tell which one is yours.
